How to choose the right ISO standard for your business

Match the standard to the problem

ISO publishes hundreds of standards, but in Nigeria a handful are relevant to most organisations. The key is to choose the one that answers the pressure you actually face, not the one with the loudest marketing.

Ask one question first: what keeps me or my leadership awake at night? Quality problems point to ISO 9001. Safety problems point to ISO 45001. Environmental or regulatory pressure points to ISO 14001. Sensitive client data points to ISO 27001.

The common starting points

ISO 9001, the quality management standard, is the most widely adopted and is built around customer satisfaction and continuous improvement. It suits manufacturers, services companies, and any organisation whose clients ask for evidence of quality discipline.

ISO 45001 is the occupational health and safety standard, essential in high-risk work such as construction, oil and gas, and heavy industry. ISO 14001 covers environmental management, and ISO 22301 covers business continuity for organisations that must stay operational through disruptions. For food businesses, FSSC 22000 and HACCP address food safety directly.

Combine standards to save cost

Many businesses run several standards together under an integrated management system, sharing policy, documentation and audit cycles across quality, safety and environment. This reduces duplication and makes certification audits faster.
