Why Nigerian contractors need ISO 45001 certification

ISO6 min read

Certification is becoming a requirement

For many years ISO certification was a competitive advantage. Today, for contractors and subcontractors working with NCDMB-licenced operators, it is increasingly a requirement. Procurement registers now ask for evidence of certified management systems before they will shortlist a supplier.

ISO 45001, the occupational health and safety standard, is usually the first of those certificates a company earns. It proves that your safety system is not a collection of posters and drills, but a documented, audited management system that can be inspected at any time.

What the certificate actually signals

A certification body does not award ISO 45001 after reading your documents. It sends auditors to inspect your site, interview your workers, and follow evidence from a risk assessment through to the control that is actually in place. Passing that audit signals three things to a client: your company can manage risk, your workforce is protected, and your management team can run an audited system.

Clients use it to shortlist suppliers faster. When two contractors present similar bids, the certified one answers the compliance question on the first page and moves the conversation forward.

Where to start

Most organisations begin with a gap assessment, where an auditor compares your current practice against the standard and lists what is missing. From there you build the documentation, train your internal auditors, run the system for a few months, and then sit a certification audit.

Novelle Center supports the full journey: advisory audits, documentation support, internal auditor training, and certification audits arranged through our UK partner bodies. If you are planning to be on next year's NCDMB contractor register, start the conversation now because the process takes planning, not just a signature.
